Dog walking

One thing you can be sure of - I know how to make the most of a walk. Dog walking isn't about wandering around idly and thinking about what you're going to eat for dinner later, it's about being fully attentive and engaged with the dog the whole time. It's not about blundering around surgically attatched to an Ipod, it's about having your eyes and your ears open and being prepared for everything.

Dog run or regular walking? I think dogs benefit equally from each. Dog runs not only provide dogs with a tremendous opportunity to socialize (a major part of their lives) but it's often their only chance to run free in the outdoors and a major source of release. A dog given regular dog run visits will grow up both comfortable with other dogs and physically strong. Having said that, regular walking is just as important to a dog as it exposes them to a wider part of the neighborhood and lets them absorb a wider range of smells. Your dog needs to build an idea of the comings and goings of the neighborhood and smells are their primary source of information. Plus, dogs benefit from the self control and discipline developed while walking and they're an ideal opportunity to reinforce the things they've learned in training. I can help your dog with this reinforcement. Whatever kind of walking you want for your dog, I can accommodate.

Pack walking or individual walking? You may have seen walkers in Manhattan taking seven or eight dogs out together at once - this is of course not for everybody. I don't walk large packs, but I will pair compatible dogs up if they live close by. I have been known to walk groups of three smaller dogs, but again only when the owners consent and definitely only if the dogs are happy. From experience I know that dogs are usually more focused when they are walking with a friend and I've seen dogs with outdoor behavior problems settle right down when paired. The most important thing is that your dog is safe - and happy.

Be aware that walks usually last a little longer if I have time - your dog is absolutely guaranteed the minumum stated above, and sometimes if things are especially quiet I've been known to take 45 minute dogs out for double that!
